It's quite simple, rather than trying to get people to buy from you, you get them to come to you when they are ready to spend.

It's the bird seed analogy, rather than running around chasing birds, you stand with birdseed in your hand, causing the birds (prospects) to come to you.

The internet has revolutionsied the way people buy, and so companies need to keep pace with this change and think how they promote their products and services to their potential customers.

This article is written from a business to business perspective. Traditionally companies would promote their products and services through some or all of these

  • Advertising
  • Exhbitions
  • Direct Mail
  • Telemarketing or cold calling

    Now technology means that a website or email campaigns can add to the tools in the sales and marketing armoury.

    But anyone who has spent the day cold calling knows that one of the challenges of getting someone to buy from you, is that the timing of the call is driven by you, and not the customers or prospects time scales. They may have a general interest in your products and services but it isn't top of their list of priorities. This means that sales people can spend a lot of time chasing buyers that may or may not buy from them.

    What is lead generation? What are the benefits?

    A lead generation programme therefore has some key benefits, if you are organised to make the most of them.

    1) The purchase is on the buyers radar - s/he had contacted you, which means that your time is spent with people who are "warmish" rather than cold.

    2)In tough times, this can give a good balance to your sales team, and show them that people are still buying, even in the current economic climate.

    3) This in turn means that your sales people are spending their time more wisley, and are more motivated by dealing with people who are further in their thought processes.

    4) It also means ( depending on your products and services )that your sales conversions can be made more cost effectively over the telephone rather than face to face.

    Before you invest in the time and energy of a lead generation programme you need to be able to capture and convert these leads. Your internal systems must follow up with people when they are signalling an interest in your product. Sending out a brochure isn't enough. It is regular genuine interest which will cause people to buy.

    Get your website to the first page of google.
    If you understand how search engine optimsation works, you can get your site onto the first page people see on the internet. But to do this you have to understand how to use keywords, design site structure, have a link building programme,etc etc. If you do that from the start it is a cost effective way of getting your brand known via the internet.

    Pay Per Click
    Pay per click advertising has revolutionised the way in which you can advertise your services to people who are ready to buy.

    A word of caution, unless you fully understand how Pay Per Click Advertising works you can quickly spend a lot of money with little return on that investment. If you fully understand how it works, and what to do and what to avoid, you can create fully controllable campaigns which fill your pipeline with good quality leads.
