Practice Makes Perfect

training and development "The more I practice the luckier I get" Gary Player

So practice makes perfect?

Think about how you learned when you developed a new skill, from walking to hitting a ball, from computer games to learning to drive.

What helped your learning?

Well, you were probably consciously thinking of what you needed to do to get better at what you were doing. You were making sense of what works for you and what doesn't.

You may have asked someone to teach, coach you or show you how it's done.

You make have tried different things just to see what happened.

You probably made more than one mistake.

And the more you practiced the easier it became.

In fact, the more your practiced, you will have stopped thinking about what you were doing.

Improving our skills at work, happens in exactly the same way.

The difference is, we get so immersed in the task, the handling of the customer, their order, their complaint, the sales presentation, the next thing to do, that we forget to stand back and think about how we approached something, what we could do differently, and how we might do that again better in the future.

So while practice makes perfect it is also the review, the conversation you have with yourself or with a coach that helps you to see ways that you could further develop your skills and your approach.

At intelligent dialogue, we want you to have the perfect practice which will help you to gain new skills and practices, and to have the space to think about your style, how it will work for you and where and when it may work against you.

On an intelligent dialogue course or development programme, we aim to help you understand how effective communication theory will work for you in practice. You just need to keep practicing, to consciously hold on to what will help you be successful in your role, so that you adopt the skills without even thinking about it.

That's how practice makes perfect.
