Managing emails
How many emails do you get a day?
Managing emails is an essential part of our daily lives.
It’s estimated that 247billion emails are sent every day.
There’s no doubt that the email has become a fast efficient method of communication but some people are drowning in their in-boxes. A friend of mine stepped into a meeting that lasted about an hour, when she came back to her desk she had received 400 mails in her inbox.
Researchers at Loughborough University found that it took an average of 64 seconds for a person to regain their train of thought after being interrupted by receiving an email.
It’s believed that the office worker of today works for an average of three minutes before an interruption occurs. And if we are constantly interrupted we can stay busy but we may not be productive.
Here’s a really useful idea to stay focused and not be distracted. It’s particularly useful for sales reps / internal sales reps who are paid to be proactive and yet can get caught in a reactive activity trap.
Split each hour into 45 minutes and 15 minute chunks. Spend the first 45 minutes of the hour focusing on the things that will make you productive and achieve your goals. Use your last 15 minutes to respond to emails. The split may be different depending on the role you carry out, but spend part of each hour focusing on the things that will take you closer to your KPI’s.
